🟪 Austin opts to re-evaluate selection process used to pick ABIA public art (Austin Business Journal)
Attention local artists: Now's your chance to try to win some of the millions of dollars that might be spent on public art displays at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport expansion.
That's because the city is opting to delay consideration of three proposed contracts with different non-local artists — totaling $10.6 million — and instead re-evaluate the selection process used in the first phase of the city's Airport-Based Public Art Plan to better include locals.
The City Council had been set to vote on the three agreements at an upcoming March 27 meeting as part of the ongoing multibillion-dollar expansion of ABIA. But a city memo published March 19 said the city’s office of arts, culture, music and entertainment withdrew the agenda items.
The delay is aimed at providing time for city staff to reassess the process it used in selecting the artists and to “ensure meaningful participation from Austin-based artists,” according to the memo by Angela Means, director of the office of arts, culture, music and entertainment.
While phase one of the art plan is being delayed, phases two and three — which were specifically designed to prioritize Texas and Austin-based artists, respectively — will continue on schedule… 🟣 FULL STORY LINK
🟪 FAA temporarily halts flights arriving at Austin's airport from Houston and Dallas (KUT)
Federal aviation officials temporarily halted flights from Dallas and Houston arriving into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Friday morning.
The Federal Aviation Administration lifted its ground stop just before noon. The FAA cited staffing issues at ABIA for the temporary pause on arrivals. ABIA advised travelers from Dallas and Houston to keep an eye out for potential delays.
It also advised travelers with flights from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, which is within Houston's airspace, to "stay in touch with their airline." "Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has heard from the FAA that the ground stop has been lifted, but we expect it to take a couple of hours or so for flight schedules into AUS from airports in the affected air space to get back on schedule," a spokesperson said. ABIA said flights arriving from Dallas and Houston airspace were affected late Friday morning.
That included flights from George Bush Intercontinental Airport, William P. Hobby Airport, Dallas Love Field and DFW International Airport. Departing flights were not affected, the airport said. ABIA has struggled with staffing in recent years.
Multiple flights nearly collided at ABIA in 2023, prompting a push to staff up the airport's air traffic controllers – some of whom were working six-day weeks to make up for staffing shortages… 🟣 FULL STORY LINK
🟪 Austin won’t get almost $10 million in requested federal funding (KXAN)
The city of Austin will miss out on about $9.7 million worth of federal funding that had been requested for various projects. President Trump signed legislation last week that funds the government through the end of September, averting a partial government shutdown.
The law also shelved all pending requests for Congressional Community Funding (CCF). CCF requests are funds provided by Congress. The funds are directed by members of Congress to specific projects within their own districts. Austin has received about $23.6 million of funding through the program since Fiscal Year 2022, according to a press release from the city Friday.
The move means Austin will not receive the funding that had been requested for various projects in 2025, including:
Waterloo Greenway Creek restoration and water quality improvements
Austin Community Violence Intervention
Dove Springs Early Childhood Education Center
Oak Brook extension of the Northern Walnut Creek Trail
Mayor Kirk Watson called the news “certainly disappointing,” but said Austin would not abandon the projects… 🟣 FULL STORY LINK
