The U.S. saw stunningly strong growth in jobs last month. Here's what to know (NPR)
As far as economic data goes, it was a bit of a stunner.
Economists had expected U.S. employers to have added about 150,000 jobs in September. Instead, they created more than a quarter-million jobs last month, while the unemployment rate fell to 4.1%, according to a report Friday from the Labor Department.

Austin police officer Christopher Taylor convicted of deadly conduct (KUT)
A Travis County jury found Austin police officer Christopher Taylor guilty of deadly conduct Saturday. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
“We hope this outcome continues to help the DeSilva family with their healing process,” Travis County District Attorney José Garza said in a statement.
“Our office is grateful to our dedicated staff who worked tirelessly to hold the defendant accountable and seek justice for the victim and their family. We further hope this verdict allows the community to heal and that we can move forward together."
Taylor was indicted for the killing of Mauris DeSilva, a 46-year-old neuroscientist, in July 2019.
Taylor and another officer, Karl Krycia, responded to 911 calls about DeSilva having a mental health crisis and holding a knife to his own neck at a downtown condominium.
The officers fatally shot DeSilva after he refused to drop the knife, KUT previously reported.
Taylor was originally indicted for the murder of DeSilva, but the charge was lessened to deadly conduct just a week before testimony began.
"The Austin Police Department respects the criminal justice process and understands this is a difficult time for all who have been impacted," APD said in a statement… 🟪 (LINK TO FULL STORY)
Does Dade Phelan have the votes to keep his job as Texas House speaker? It depends on how you count. (Texas Tribune)
The race for speaker of the Texas House has narrowed, pitting Beaumont Republican Dade Phelan, who has held the gavel since 2021, against Rep. David Cook, R-Mansfield, who has emerged as the challenger designated by a group disillusioned with House leadership.
Earlier this month, during a private meeting of Republican House members and nominees, four other speaker challengers dropped out and endorsed Cook — and 48 attendees committed to supporting him over Phelan.
Assuming all 48 of those Republicans win their respective November elections and cast a vote for House speaker in January, that would mean a majority of House Republicans don’t support Phelan… 🟪 (LINK TO FULL STORY)
Swedish Hill on a growth kick in Austin (Austin Business Journal)
Swedish Hill bakery is opening in place of a former Foxtrot Market on South First Street.
The McGuire Moorman Lambert Hospitality’s bakery, Swedish Hill, will open its third location at 1804 S. First St. in early 2025, according to a social media post by the company.
MML Hospitality, parent company to Clark’s Oyster Bar, Ski Shores Café, Sammie’s Italian and others, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The company announced earlier this year its expansion to Westlake, with a second location at 3663 Bee Cave Road. Prior to that, Swedish Hill downsized the footprint of its West Sixth Street location as the area undergoes major change that will usher in a new mixed-use community.
Earlier this summer, the Chicago-based market Foxtrot announced it would reopen in Austin in the summer but has yet to announce where it plans to revive its markets in the city.
Foxtrot won’t be returning to at least three of the locations it leased here… 🟪 (LINK TO FULL STORY)
